AH172  Black and Blue All year round

Highlights:
  • Gjábakkahellir cave
  • Snorkeling in the Silfra

Tour Description:

We start with the black as we explore the hidden world of the lava field under the Þingvellir national park. Walking in a cave and discovering the marvels that volcanic activity has created in the past is a trip that everyone can undertake. The Gjábakkahellir cave is a perfect example of an Icelandic lava tube and is situated in one of the most active volcano areas in the world. After the cave we dine on a packed lunch before moving on into the blue...

Snorkeling in Silfra is our second adventure. The Silfra fissure is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, an otherworldly scene that is world famous for its heavenly shades of blue. The crystal clear water in the deep fissure gives you a feeling of being weightless as you float down with the lazy current. The snorkeling is a relaxing but exotic trip in an environment most will only encounter in their dreams.

The Black & Blue is an amazing trip, a true journey to the borders of reality and dreams.

Trip difficulty 2 out of 5 possible.

We recommend hiking boots, warm and windproof clothing, gloves and warm undergarments (fleece / wool / thermal) and warm socks. Hiking boots and windproof jackets and pants can be rented from the tour operator.

This was a fantastic thing to do during a cold winter day in Iceland. I highly recommend it! Guli, our guide, was so patient with our group (6 people), and he made the caving and snorkeling a lot of fun (while also being very professional). My husband and I really enjoyed going underground through the lava tube and snorkeling in the Silfra fissure. The sunset pictures after our snorkeling trip were the most beautiful photos I took while in Iceland. Amazing!

We booked the Black and Blue tour and were picked up at our hotel promptly. Unfortunately due to the weather, the caves were unreachable due to the snow and ice but not only were we given a full refund for this part of the tour, the guide took us round the national park while we were waiting for the snorkelling. He was very informative and we managed to get some great pics of Iceland in winter. All equipment supplied fitted perfectly and we were constantly reassured about the experience of snorkelling in near freezing water! Needless to say, we were warm in our suits and the underwater landscape is remarkable. The trip was a very worthwhile experience, made even better by the snow which was a couple of feet deep in places. So, a great day out and one I wont forget!

This tour was a lot of fun. We started the day with snorkeling at Silfra. We thought the water would be absolutely freezing, but the dry suits keeps you pretty warm. The water was incredibly clear and there were a lot of really interesting rock formations to see. We did the cave portion of the tour after lunch. Our guide was great and pointed out a lot of interesting features in the lava tube and told us stories about Icelandic folklore and history during our tour. This tour is definitely worth doing if you are in Iceland.

This is a must-do tour! Not only was the silfa snorkelling as beautifully blue as it gets, but the caving was as raw as it gets. Our experience was made a thousand times better by the enthusiasm and stories of our guide Gulli...and the comical experience of practically vacuum sealing ourselves in dry suits. This tour exceeded our high expectations. Nobody else had booked, so we were lucky that Grayline's the only company to offer a guaranteed departure for 2 people.
