AH30  South Coast & Þórsmörk 1 May 2012 -
30 Sep 2012

Highlights:
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Þórsmörk
  • Stakkholtsgjá

Tour Description:

We begin this tour by driving over the mountain heath Hellisheiði towards Selfoss town and then along the south shore to Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

From there our journey continues towards the interior to our main attraction, Þórsmörk (i.e. Thor’s Woodland), a nature reserve shielded on three sides by glaciers and mountains. The glacial melt-off forms rivers that have to be crossed on the way, which can change in a matter of hours from an innocent stream into a thunderous torrent. Some days the crossing is quite challenging or even impossible but our skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions and will take you safely across the rivers.

Panoramas IcelandOnce there we make a stop to enjoy the breathtaking scenery with its multitude of small gullies and valleys, clad with low birch-trees that create seemingly endless possibilities for the nature lover. Various hiking routes are available and everyone can find a suitable one. There is enough time to take about a one hour hike and enjoy your lunch (which you can either bring with you or buy at our stop in Hvolsvöllur).

On our way back we will stop at the rugged gorge of Stakkholtsgjá for a 1 hour hike to the end of the gorge. A small river needs to be crossed on the way by stepping from one stone to another. At the end of the gorge we are rewarded by a nice waterfall, which can be reached by stepping up some bigger rocks/stones This tour is truly unforgettable for the nature lover at heart and ideal as a hiking trip.

We went on this tour last week and had a great time! Our guide was friendly and really knew everything about the areas we were touring. I had taken a similar tour with Gray Line 5 years ago and loved that so wasnt sure if this one could equal the other...but it did! Would not hesitate to book with Gray Line again...and will!

We very much enjoyed our trip along the south coast and Þorsmork. Great driver / guide who shared lots of information about the sites we were seeing as well as life in Iceland. The destination was outstanding and well worth the trip. We could have used a little help (portable bridges) crossing the stream during our hike up the canyon as a few of the guests couldn't complete the hike up to the end of the canyon, which for those of us who could make it was outstanding.

Iceland Excursions:

Thank you for your review and comments about the AH30 South Coast and Þórsmörk tour. The streams in the canyon of Stakkholtsgja change their route constantly which makes the hike a little tricky at times. This is after all  run-off water from the glacier and although the streams are many and rather small they are unpredictable in their water volume. Portable bridges seem like a good idea but difficult to implement in this area.

This tour is an extensive trip along the South Coast to view the landscapes and features. It allows participants to walk the 'moonscape' valley, climb the falls, enjoy a short gentle hike in the aspen and walk behind the larger falls. The guide was more than competent with great driving skills, abundant facts, personal tales and a helping hand in some of the more difficult passages. Who could ask for more?

This was one of my favourite trips, even though it rained all day. The guide, Helgi, was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable and explained the history and the geography of the terrain very well. He answered all our questions. He was an excellent, confident driver over all the rough terrain. We had so much fun. It was a wonderful, fun area to visit and the fall colours were spectacular. I really liked the walk to the falls and the fun climb when we got there. This was a great trip and I hope you keep offering it as one of your day tours. Thanks, Norine
